Warmer weather is often an impetus to soak up more time outside. For nature lovers based in the Midwest, Taliesin has expanded its active recreation options by adding The Welsh Hills Trail to the estate grounds. Completed with assistance from The Ice Age Trail Alliance, Driftless Area Land Conservancy, REI, Friends of the Spring Green River Trail, and many other dedicated volunteers, this new trail traverses about a mile of the lower slopes through the hillside, connecting the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center with Unity Chapel, and affording hikers a serene perspective of the Driftless Region in addition to an up-close look at ongoing ecological restoration of the landscape. The relatively flat terrain also makes it accessible for most outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers can then return on the same trail or take the paved recreational path along Highway 23 back to the start.
“We are excited to provide an entirely new Taliesin experience for our visitors,” states Taliesin Preservation’s Executive Director Carrie Rodamaker. “We have been working long and hard to create opportunities like this so that people can interact with the landscape which inspired Frank Lloyd Wright and those that followed him.”
The Welsh Hills Trail will remain open year-round and is free of charge.
