A Swedish brand, NJRD (pronounced Njord) is a new addition to the Scandinavian design world, launching back in 2020. Design duo Bernadotte & Kylberg are the award-winning design collaboration behind the brand, bringing with them their extensive design background and knowledge.
The pair both studied, though not at the same time, at Forsberg’s, a graphic design school in Stockholm. Carl Philip Bernadotte also studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, a prestigious art college in the USA while Oscar Kylberg worked as Creative Director for several brands in his native Sweden as well as internationally.
Since the start of their collaboration back in 2012 the duo has designed products for many well-known brands both at home in Sweden and abroad. You may already know the Helix collection for Georg Jensen or the Stockholm for Stelton as well as collections for Skultuna and a suite at the Ice hotel in Sweden.
The Bernadotte & Kylberg design language is often graphic and modern while at the same time with a passion to carry on the Scandinavian design heritage. It is these qualities that embody the NJRD products.
Meet the designers behind NJRD - Oscar Kylberg and Carl Philip Bernadotte.
The Bernadotte & Kylberg mission is to create unique and long-lasting design pieces that are both functional and timeless. By allowing each products purpose to govern the aesthetics of their design they manage to keep their primary focus on the user of their products. They believe it is their job as designers to not only question how a product will look but also how it will be used. A beautiful product is after all useless if it is not fit for purpose. Durability is key to NJRD, using high quality materials such as New Zealand wool and recycled cotton, that are well considered, ensuring that their products will be with you for generations to come. Their inspiration for NJRD is drawn, not only from the colours of the Scandinavian nature that surrounds them in their home country of Sweden but also from a desire to pay homage to the Scandinavian lifestyle and design culture that precedes them, creating products that feel modern but with deep roots.
The aim is very much to create collections and products that are relevant and usable but remain personal as well as innovative.
Monochrome graphic shapes meet tactile textures in NJRD’s first two collections.
Sink your feet into one of NJRD’s soft, deep carpets made from New Zealand wool or cuddle up on the sofa with a warm and cosy wool throw.
NJRD currently has two collections to their name. The first collection released in 2020 is the Shapes Collection. Graphic lines and shapes collide in a collection that takes its inspiration from the Scandinavian landscape and lifestyle whilst also drawing on aspects of Scandinavian design history.
The Edges Collection, which followed a year later, is an evolution of Shapes. Building on the first collection Edges is less about complementing and contrasting colours, with a more monochrome design language that plays with structural and tactile design elements. In this way the user is encouraged to explore and feel every aspect of the product.
Taking inspiration from their Scandinavian heritage and the colours of the Swedish coastline, the rich colour palettes of both collections are designed to be mixed and matched in complementing tones in your home to “make your moment Scandinavian” as their tag line suggests.
The Lines by NJRD is a pared back and tactile porcelain collection. Made from durable vitro porcelain this is a collection that is designed to last. The contrast between the matt outside of the plates, bowls and cups and the shiny inner edge is both intriguing to the eye and pleasing to the touch. The collection includes everything from plates and coffee mugs to teapots and sugar bowls. The colours are designed to mix and match so why not create your very own Scandinavian moment by mixing two or more tones for a more interesting table setting.
A simple white, monochrome table setting is both timeless and elegant.
The very first item in the NJRD collections was the Metric focus No. 1 recycled cotton throw. Building on this, both collections now include a number of recycled cotton or soft wool throws in a wide range of colours to suit all styles. Add a thoughtful touch to your dinner parties and provide each guest with a soft cotton blanket to keep them warm after their meal or drape a wool throw over the arm of the sofa for a cosy Scandinavian moment in the evening wrapped up by the fire.
You will find a varying collection of rugs among NJRD’s Shapes and Edges collections. From the deep, soft New Zealand wool rugs to the lightweight washable terry cotton bathroom mats. Add a strong pop of colour to your living room with the monochromatic Edges collection, or perhaps you are looking for something harder wearing such as kelim rug for the high traffic areas of your home.
Whether you are looking for a towel for the beach or something to wrap yourself in after a bath look no further than the Stripes bath towel collection. This 100% organic cotton towel is super soft and highly absorbent. With colours inspired by the Swedish coastline and modern graphic motif these towels look just as good hung in your bathroom as they do draped over the deck waiting for you after your evening dip in the sea – there is no moment more Scandinavian than that!
